The question of monetizing generative artificial intelligence (AI) remains, as the price of subscriptions does not seem to cover its induced energy costs. According to The Verge , Perplexity is introducing the possibility of purchasing products directly within it, without commission. Surprising, right?
Perplexity’s US-based Pro subscribers can now use a “Buy with Pro” button to order products without leaving the AI search interface. The company is offering free shipping on all purchases made through the new feature, while ineligible products will redirect users to the merchant’s site, according to The Verge .
A commission-free approach?
Surprisingly, Perplexity currently claims to take no commission on sales made through its buy button. A spokesperson emphasizes that there is “no commercial element” to the feature, which raises questions about the long-term business model. She does not specify what will happen to users of the free model.
In the meantime, non-subscribers aren’t left out, as they’re also shareholder database getting new AI-assisted shopping features, including enhanced product listings. These listings include images, pricing, and AI-generated summaries of key features and customer reviews.
Innovation and business perspectives
Perplexity is also launching “Snap to Shop,” a visual search tool similar to Google Lens that allows users to snap a photo of a product to get information. The feature, initially available to pro subscribers, is in addition to the platform’s existing visual search capabilities.
The company is also rolling out a dedicated Perplexityr ba leads AI integrates program for merchants, providing them with insights into search and purchase trends. This initiative aims to increase the visibility of participating merchants’ products, suggesting possible future monetization via commercial partnerships.
